Flush Valve (replace)



Initially turn off the water supply as the toilet cistern has to be removed to do the job. Once the water is off, flush the toilet and then wipe out any remaining water that is in the cistern. Unscrew the water supply coupling nut from underneath the tank. Untighten the holding bolts which attach the toilet cistern to the bowl. Use penetrating oil if the bolts are tight. Unhook the chain from the handle. Soho Plumbers carry all the right tools for this.

Lay the cistern on an old towel. Take off the spud washer (large rubber) and its nut from the bottom of the flush valve with a wrench. Take the old flush valve off and put the new flush valve in the valve hole and check the top of the overflow pipe is at least 1" below the cistern high level marking and the hole where the handle is fitted. Put the flush valve below the handle lever arm, fixing it to the cistern from beneath with the spud
nut. Tighten the nut slightly more than hand tight with a spud wrench or channel type pliers. Be careful not to crack the cistern when tightening any fittings. Put the new spud washer over the spud nut, small side down. Put the cistern down face up and place the correct washers onto the tank bolts and insert it into the holes from inside the cistern. Put the brass washers and hexagonal nuts onto the bolts from below and tighten them slightly more hand tight. Now place the tank over the bowl and sit it down so the washer will sit over the water inlet in the bowl and the cistern bolts fit through the holes in the bowl flange. Fix the cistern and bowl together. Alternatively you could ask Mayfair Plumbers to do the job.

Fix the tank to the bowl. Re-connect the water supply at the fill valve inlet. Re-connect the chain clip to the handle. Attach the refill tube back to the top of the overflow pipe. Turn on the water supply at the stop valve and test the flush.
