Freezing Pipework




When a pipe freezes it can be the beginning of a real nightmare, depending on which pipe and where. Without our supply of water, life is quite uncomfortable, so we must know how to deal with its loss, even if it is only a temporary resolution. Should there be an interruption to the water supply, you should firstly ask your neighbours if they too have the same problem as it may at the supply company’s end. If not, then it is your problem. If it is just your pipes that are affected, then they may well be frozen (if the weather is very cold)

1). Turn off the main stop-cock. It is usually found this under the kitchen sink or where the main supply enters the property.

2). Carry out an inspection of all the pipework that you are able to access for evidence of any freezing for example ice can form on pipes.

3). Opening a cold water tap that is situated very close to the part of the pipe that's frozen will allow water to flow when it thaws.

4). Do not use direct heat like blowtorch or heat gun so more damage is avoided.

5). Using the warm air from a hairdryer to defrost the pipes might help. Running water behind the frozen section can help to thaw the problem. A trickle of water from an open tap is a sign that it is working.
