WC Cistern



A normal WC cistern is slightly different than many years ago. In fact the cistern is now, quite a modern piece of technology. The water supplied to the cistern was controlled by an older float operated valve, which as it sat on the water level would lower when flushed and the by lowering would open and the fill valve at the bottom and let the cistern fill. Once the float had raised with the incoming water to a fixed level the water would stop, ready to go again.

Before 1993, 9ltr (2 gallon) cisterns for flushing were used. But, in order to try to conserve water, the volume was reduced, first to 7½ltrs and finally to the volume we use now of 6ltrs. WC systems worked by using a “Siphonic” device, but nowadays there is another design which consists of a valve that is lifted allowing the water to flow. To discharge this from the cistern down into the pan, a device is employed that shuts off when the most effective volume of water has been discharged. Mayfair Plumbers fit toilet systems.

Brief description:

Siphonic Affect.
Happens when water leaves a container with no kind of mechanical aid. It travels up and over a tube in the shape of an upside down ‘J’. The long leg joins to the flush pipe whilst the short leg is open to the water in the cistern. As the air is removed a partial vacuum occurs. This is started by a large diaphragm washer lifting and causing a quantity of water to discharge away through the flush pipe taking air and causing a partial vacuum. Valve Type.
Two buttons are usually fitted to the cistern, one for a short flush (low volume) and one for a long flush (larger volume). They use a long and short rod system which release the small and larger volumes of water as needed.
